I had the privilege of offering massage therapy to Joseph and a few of his guests earlier in the year, and can attest to the unvarnished truth regarding his fruit salad... it is truly THE GREATEST.

Joseph's beautiful home, hospitality and unrivaled knowledge of Mysore promise an experience you will not soon forget. He is an Old World gentleman in 21st century India.

Highly recommended.

Staying at Chez Mr. Joseph provided me with an excellent introduction to Gokulam during my first visit to the shala. Not only is Joseph incredibly hospitable, kind, and full of fascinating stories, he has a never-ending list of tips for how to best enjoy your time in Mysore. Even if you only stay at the house for a few days (though longer visits are welcome), you will continue to benefit indefinitely from having Joseph as a contact, for advice or just high-quality socializing.

I could not complete this recommendation without mentioning the fruit salad. It is absolutely divine, especially when eaten in the special Joseph fashion, with hot dosas, fresh curd, and crunchy meusli.

Thank you, Joseph, for welcoming me to the AYRI community and making me feel at home here in Gokulam!

Mr Joseph's is a great place to stay on a first trip to Mysore, or while you are getting settled in. Not only is it located 5 minutes walk from the shala, it's also a lovely house, with lots of discrete spaces to hang out, read or just gather to chat. Guests can also use the great kitchen, and really make themselves at home. Most of all, Mr J is a great source of yogic and local knowledge, and really makes everyone feel at home.
Many thanks!

Travelling to India is a bit like a washing machine. You get thrown in, tossed around with some ingredients and hopefully in the ,you come out clean if not a bit stretched at the end of it! Add an Ashtanga practice in the mix and you are in for something!!

A stay at the Ritz Gokulam can ease you in a bit. I have had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Joseph for many years and his place is not to be missed. With his incredible experience of India and love for the practice you have the best of both. Everything is catered for, yet retains the indian houshold experience in his beautiful place.

Not to mention his FAmOUS fruit salad!!!!!

Whether its 3 days, 3 weeks, or 3 months, a stay at the Ritz is not be missed...

Chez Joseph is lovely! If you like to make yourself at home then this is the place for you! I had the best night sleep (s) I have had in weeks during my stay here. And a great yoga practice in the living room too!

Joseph is incredibly hospitable. He is a kind hearted, creative, fun, and patient man. Since he has lived here for so many years, Joseph knows the ropes and he shared his resources with me which enhanced my experience greatly.

Thank you Joseph for your significant contribution to my time in Mysore. I appreciate you very much!!

ON BEHALF OF COURTNEY WHO STAYED AT MR. JOSEPH'S...

I spent the week at Chez Joseph's and it couldn't
have been a nicer way to enter India. In my usual effort to keep flight costs down, I ended up arriving in Bangalore at 3am, not a good time to negotiate with a driver a fair-fare to Mysore. Mr. Joseph, however, had already taken care of it all and had a driver waiting for me-- valiantly--in the middle of the night with a hand-held sign honoring my arrival. The driver called ahead to Joseph to let him know I landed and fearlessly lead the way straight to Joseph's door where he (Joseph) stood smiling--at 4:30am--barefoot but with the porch lights on. A beautifully adorned bed--with a robe, sandalwood soap, a tuber- rose mala and chocolates a-rest upon the pillow--awaited me as did a plush 6 days of living. Wi-fi, hanging porch chairs, and lush fruit salads, graced with Mr. Joseph's secret Omega-powered sauce--were just among a few of the benefits, but he best thing of all is Mr. Joseph himself who is not only a gentleman but also a darned-funny guy.

Happy Memories for sure...

Our first meeting with Mysore was a bag of c-vitamins, juice, bananas and snacks sent from Mr Joseph with the driver that picked us up at the airport. It was so nice to be met with some kind compassion after a long flight from Norway. Then finding our peace in his lovely and comfortable guest house. Getting an introduction to indian and josehpian cooking. And also recieving lots of information and help finding our way around Mysore.

Thanks a lot, for a great start!

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Mr Josephs and highly recommend it. It is not only a great place to stay and very close to the shala but you also get to draw upon Mr Joseph's years of knowledge of Mysore's people and places making your stay that little bit easier. His fruit salad also lives up to it's reputation as being both delicious and nutritious.

Chez Joseph is a wonderful introduction to the 'Mysore' experience. This is myself and my wife's first time in India/Mysore and Joseph has eased and greatly enriched the experience. His beautiful house is a very easy and relaxed place to live. I really enjoyed visiting with him and the other guests over his excellent coffee and smoothies in the mornings. Unfortunately, I could not stay as long as i wished this time, but my wife will enjoy this home for the next few months.

Mr Joseph welcomed us with open arms and continued to do so the entire trip - not a small feat when dealing a two year old!

All of the guests we met during our stay have become good friends and we can't wait to return.

Mr. Joseph reminded us that he and his house were blessed to have little Lila staying there but our real blessing was Mr. Joseph.

The best thing about Chez Mr. Joseph's is Mr. Joseph himself. Anything that needs done around the house gets done immediately (including speaking to neighbors about barking dogs in the middle of the night...9:30 for us yogi's). He's a wealth of information and just good company!

A great place to spend some time, especially if it is your first trip.

Joseph took me in with great hospitality on extremely short notice when another guesthouse overbooked. My stay was lovely. The rooms are calm and comfortable, common spaces inviting, and amenities (hot water shower, filtered drinking water, kitchen, wireless internet, phone) ample. Moreover, Joseph is a great gentleman whose knowledge of Mysore is a great help.

For those practicing yoga at KPJAYI, the location could not be better: on a quiet street a few minutes walk from the shala, Anu's cafe, knowledgeable rickshaw drivers, and main street Gokulam.

And to echo some comments above...the fruit salad with dosa, curd, and granola is as Joseph describes it: a magical breakfast.

Thanks Joseph!

I arrived after a long journey and was so happy to arrive Mysore and spend the first week chez Mr Joseph. I could not recommend a more comfortable and pleasant place to land. From the daily newspapers which I read on the balcony, to the UPS back up system which was perfect given the daily (and frequent) power outages (no need to read by candlelight), a fully outfitted kitchen, hot water, all is provided. The bathrobe kimono was unexpected and a delightful little piece of luxury. Not something I would ever think to bring with me, but such a perfect thought! I hope you all have the chance to feast on his amazing fruit salad as well. I would highly recommend Joseph's.

And for being so hospitable and enjoyable to spend time with too! Elena and Henrik

Joseph, I came across your house by chance online and am so pleased that I made the decision to stay with you for my first visit to The Shala. You ensure that guests have a smooth time of things from the very start, from pick up at the airport -the driver arrives with juice, fruit and water - for the four hour ride, meeting guests at the house and swiftly tending to any little problems as well as sharing your knowledge tips and offering a wonderful local orientation on the back of the Enfield Bullet. Your house was described to me as 'the nicest house in Gokulam' and another bonus were the other wonderful guests who were a pleasure to spend time with.
Highly recommended - especially for first time Shala students.

I had the pleasure of staying at Josephs in December 2008, and can highly recommend the experience to other Yogi's, especially first timers to Mysore. This was my first time to Mysore and i was travelling alone, so was comforting to have somewhere safe to stay and ideally located to be able to walk to most places in Gokulam. Especially after hearing some of the safety issues other yogi's were experiencing.
Somehow, i managed to miss the fruit salad experience (Joseph, u will need to email me the secret recipe), but Joseph was very friendly and kind, and took the time to take me around town and introduce me to some people.
Many Thanks and best wishes for 2009. Ana x

I have just spent 5 wonderful weeks in Joseph's lovely guest house. Joseph is an excellent host - like having a good friend around.

The house is instantly a home and I was lucky to have been both the only guest and also one of a full house of guests during my stay.

I loved reading from the hundreds of books in his collection and also getting some in-house yoga instruction when I needed it.

I also enjoyed roaring around all over Mysore with Joseph on his Enfield motorcycle!

As well as being shown around and introduced to everyone - Joseph set me up with the best Dentist and Ayurvedic doctor so I came home completely cleansed, healthy and rejuvenated.

The big highlight though was of course those days when I would wake up to THE best fruit salad in the world for breakfast. This alone is reason to return to India!

I will treasure my time at Chez Mr J and definitely recommend it - it's so much more than a great place to stay.

Thanks Joseph

Joseph is a long time friend of the Jois family, having travelled to Mysore 16 years ago to study with Guruji, he never left! He is the consummate host. On my first day, he took me on a tour of the local area on the back of his motorcycle and since that day, he has gone out of his way to make my stay happy and comfortable. His house is lovely and clean and has been filled with other wonderful yogis while I’ve been here. I highly recommend Joseph’s house for a short stay or a long stay. It is a particularly great place for first-timers (as I am/was) to Mysore.

Namaskar :) I had the pleasure of staying at Joseph's guesthouse, and the experience was all good from beginning to end. I was met at the airport by a very friendly driver, who had waited forever for my delayed flight. Joseph had sent with him a bag of juice and water, so all I had to do was sit back and enjoy the view from Bangalore to Mysore. We got a flat tyre along the way, but the man was all equipped and it took him 5 min to change the tyre. I arrived at Joseph's place just in time for breakfast, and the delicious fruit salad was enjoyed in the company of other travelers. I felt right at home at once! Being a first time traveller to Mysore, and furthermore traveling alone, I could not have asked for a better place to stay. Joseph took me for a ride around town, getting me acquainted with the hot spots of the place. He made sure I met all the people and even brought me along for a b-day party on my second day there. The house is safe, clean and friendly, not to mention my beautiful room, the princess suit, which I will miss so much. Also it is located 3 min from the Shala makes it very convenient. I highly recommend Chez Mr Joseph's guesthouse, and wish that your stay in Mysore will be as good as mine!

Best

I was recommended to stay at Mr. Joseph's by a good friend, so I contacted him at once. I received a very warm reply and I decided to spend the whole month of my stay in Mysore at his house in Gokulam. Arriving at the wee hours of them morn I immediately felt welcome and taken care of, which is nice when you're a first timer in a place. I simply had a great time and met a bunch of wonderful people. I totally agree with everything 'Panda' (from Norway) has written, too, expect we didn't have a flat tire on the way. Thanks' Mr.Joseph!

Dear Joseph,

For some reason both Elisabeth's and my comment was made from Panda's Google account, and I also left out my name. I am the second "Panda"

On the way from Mysore to the airport in Bangalore we had a flat tire, so I got to experience that, too. The driver made a amazingly swift change of tires and we had a very smooth onward ride.

I highly recommend the whole Mysore "package" and have a wonderful stay at Chez Joseph!

Dear Joseph:  Thank you for making my trip to Mysore a smooth one.  I believe the wonderful service you provide at your guest house is exactly what many new or tenured Mysore travelers/students need.  If potential guests have any concern about cleanliness, safety, food and/or water - or any other issues, your guest house is the best place to stay in Mysore!  The cost value is well worth the peace of mind that you and your house provide!

For someone coming to India for the first time, this place is ideal. Joseph is there to help you with everything you need to know for a pleasant stay (where it is safe to eat, where to practice yoga, who to call for a rickshaw, where to get the best exchange rate, etc.). In India, simple things can be pretty complicated sometimes. Gokulam is a nice neighborhood away from the busy center of Mysore. Joseph’s place is on a quieter street, but near everything you need. As others said already, Joseph is very friendly and helpful. Nandini, the maid, is very nice and discreet. Once a week, Joseph reunites all his guests to have breakfast, it is a nice occasion to meet new friends. It is a very friendly place well-known by Yoga practitioners and is definitely a better choice than the impersonal hotels in Mysore.

Spent one month (October 09) at Joseph's guesthouse. Amazing and very comfortable. If you are on a mixed holiday/work trip, like I was, his back-up batteries are a blessing when you are on a deadline and the rest of the city is on candle lights. Also, his concierge service is amazing: I e-mailed him several printing jobs and found the papers in my room next morning. Joseph is a very experienced Mysore resident and has a lot of entertaining stories, and I cherished the Saturday mornings spent socializing with interesting people around the breakfast table in the dining hall. I wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Joseph's Guesthouse to anyone wanting an hassle-free and rewarding stay in Mysore!

I really recommend staying at the Ritz Gokulam. This was my first trip to Mysore and I was traveling by myself. Staying with Mr. Joseph made my trip very special. He had a driver waiting at the train station to pick me up - no worrying about where I was going or how to get there. Upon arriving at the house, my lovely room was waiting for me - just as promised.

The house is set up where you can have your privacy in your room and friends to interact with in the common areas. As a mom of two small children, I was not sure how I would like traveling alone. I liked it so much, in part thanks to Mr. Joseph's accommodations, that I extended my trip by two weeks.

There really are power outages in India all of the time!! It is very important to have a backup power source if you are at all concerned about having 24 hour access to internet or hot showers. Mr. Joseph has this taken care of - although this may be the only place in town with backup power.

The house is on a lovely little street which is very close to several local eating places and shopping. I am sure that you will enjoy your trip to Mysore and your stay with Mr. Joseph. I did and can not wait to come back.

Staying with Mr. Joseph should be required for all first time Mysore visits. I can't imagine how I could have made it through without his guidance, assistance and kindness. I stayed two months at the guesthouse and loved every second of it.

From the moment I arrived at the airport in Bangalore-to a sign with my name and a friendly, reliable driver-I knew I was in good hands. After a well-deserved nap, Mr. Joseph showed me to the shala and ensured I registered properly. He drove me around Mysore on his beautiful Royal Enfield motorcycle and made me feel right at home.

Our wonderful housekeeper, Nandini, kept us in clean clothes, sheets and surroundings while also being kind and friendly. I really miss seeing her everyday.

The memories I have from my 8 weeks at Mr. Joseph's, and the wonderful friends I met at the house made my trip that much more special.

I honestly cannot recommend staying with Mr. Joseph enough. The pleasure and privilege was mine.

Dear Mr. Joseph,

I am coming to study yoga in Mysore at the Kpjay shala on March 4th, and am looking for a moderately-priced room to rent for the first week (March 4th-March 11th) (shorter would also be okay). Do you have anything available for these dates, or at least for the first week of March?

Thank you so much - I would absolutely love to meet you and stay in your beautiful home and look forward to hearing from you.

Namaste,
Lexie (alexa.r.jordan@gmail.com)
